What is the News

The government has confirmed that the 8th Central Pay Commission will be formed soon. This ends the long wait and speculation. Along with this, the issue of restoring the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) will also be discussed. Union Minister of State Jitendra Singh told employee representatives that the announcement of the 8th Pay Commission will be made soon. A meeting with the Pension Secretary has also been planned to discuss the restoration of OPS in detail.

According to reports, the 8th Pay Commission is likely to be implemented in 2026. The government has clarified that there is no plan to delay it till 2027.

Talks and Approval

A recent report in Financial Express said that more than 1 crore central government employees and pensioners may get relief soon. The central government is in talks with the state governments on the 8th Pay Commission and may announce it soon. Last month, a delegation of the National Federation of Government Employees (GENC) met Jitendra Singh regarding this issue.

Earlier in January, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the government has approved the 8th Central Pay Commission. He added that it will not only improve the lives of employees but also increase consumption. Later, the government told Parliament that the Terms of Reference and other details will be decided in time.

The Finance Ministry informed in August that the notification is delayed because suggestions for the Terms of Reference are still being received. Inputs were invited in January and February 2025, and even now suggestions are coming in. The ministry said the official notification will be issued after reviewing all inputs.
