AI Driving License- The Uttar Pradesh government has started using artificial intelligence (AI) in the driving license testing process. At the new Automated Driving Test Track Center in Prayagraj, now not an inspector but an AI system equipped with sensors and cameras will evaluate the driving skills of the candidate. The transport department claims that this technology will make the testing completely transparent and fair, eliminating the possibility of any kind of human bias or corruption. This model is already live in many cities and can be implemented across the state in the coming time.

Actually, Uttar Pradesh is not the first state to experiment like this. Earlier, AI-based automated driving test tracks were created in states like Delhi , Maharashtra and Gujarat in partnership with Maruti Suzuki and state governments. Automated tracks have been working in RTOs like Sarai Kale Khan, Mayur Vihar and Wazirabad in Delhi for the last few years. There too, the test of hundreds of candidates is now decided by sensors and cameras instead of inspectors. Bringing this technology to UP is considered special because the number of people applying for licenses here is very high.

Maruti Suzuki has recently completed the automation of 12 more tracks in the state. Equipped with sensors, high-definition cameras and AI algorithms, this system captures data of every driving activity, such as braking, acceleration, reversing, parking and hill-start. Based on this data, the computer instantly decides whether to pass or fail. These tracks, designed as per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, are said to meet road safety standards. It will reportedly have a 100-mark test and applicants will have to score at least 60 marks to pass. Moreover, the results will be generated instantly by AI and updated directly on the online portal of the transport department.

The government believes that this change will definitely make it difficult to get a driving license, but it will strengthen road safety. According to statistics, the major reason for road accidents in India every year is the lack of driving skills. In such a situation, the AI based test will assess the real ability of the candidate and only eligible candidates will get the license. This is the reason why the central government has recently approved UP’s AI-powered road safety model. It can also be used in services like e-challan and traffic monitoring in the future.

In this way, Uttar Pradesh has joined the list of select states where the driving license test has now become completely technology-based. At present, this system has been implemented in select districts including Prayagraj, but in the coming months, there are plans to bring it to big cities like Lucknow, Varanasi, Kanpur and Noida. The government aims to implement this model in all the RTOs of the entire state in the next two years.
