In the last few months, the wholesale prices of mustard oil have increased by up to ₹ 30 per kilogram. But this is not the only problem. While earlier one liter of oil meant 910 grams, now most of the companies in the market are selling packets of 810 to 840 grams by calling them one liter. The result is that customers are taking about 70 to 100 grams less oil than before, but are paying more for it than before.
Customers are not aware, and shopkeepers are also worried
Kumar Gaurav, a grocery shopkeeper of Hadiya Patti, says, “Customers think that they are buying one liter of oil, whereas in reality they are getting less oil.” He says that some big brands are still selling 910 grams of oil, but their price has reached ₹ 210 per liter, which is beyond the reach of common people. Shopkeeper Sumit says that customers are very confused due to the reduced quantity and increased prices, and they do not even realize that they are paying more for less oil.
Kitchen budget spoiled
The biggest impact of tampering in oil packets is on the kitchens of common families. Rekha Devi, a resident of Tilkamanjhi, says, “Earlier, 5 liters of oil used to last for the whole month, but now the consumption of oil has increased. We did not even realize that the packet, which we were considering as one liter, had reduced the quantity of oil.”
At the same time, Sunita Devi of Mundichak says that now she has to reduce the use of oil in food, due to which the taste of food is also getting affected. According to wholesaler Rahul Jain, due to weight loss and lack of programs in Sawan, oil sales have also declined by 40%.
Ignoring consumer rights and the law
According to CA Pradeep Kumar Jhunjhunwala, according to the Indian Weights Act, the weight of one liter of any liquid is mandatory to be 910 grams. But instead of increasing the price, companies are reducing the weight, which is directly against the interests of the consumer. It is mandatory to write the net weight on the packet, but many companies are not following this rule. It is the responsibility of the government to strictly investigate this matter and save the general public from this fraud.
