If we look at the production of the last few years, the total production of mustard in 2019-20 was 91.24 lakh tonnes. After this, in 2020-21, it increased to 102.10 lakh tonnes. This production was recorded at 119.63 lakh tonnes in 2021-22, 126.43 lakh tonnes in 2022-23, and about 126.06 lakh tonnes in 2024-25.

What could be the situation?

In March 2025, the total arrival of mustard across the country was 14.50 lakh metric tonnes, while during this period, the crushing was only up to 11.50 lakh metric tonnes. In April, the arrival was 15 lakh tonnes and crushing was 13 lakh tonnes. In May, it was 11 lakh tonnes, and crushing was 10.50 lakh tonnes. At the same time, it was 10 lakh tonnes in June, but crushing increased to 11.25 lakh tonnes.

Major producing states

Among the major mustard cultivating states in India, Rajasthan is at the forefront, where this year, 54.10 lakh tonnes were produced. After this, 20.35 lakh tonnes of mustard were produced in Uttar Pradesh, 16.66 lakh tonnes in Madhya Pradesh, 12.48 lakh tonnes in Haryana, and 7.96 lakh tonnes in West Bengal.

What could be the prices going forward?

Let us tell you that in the last month, the prices of mustard seeds have increased by ₹ 400 per quintal, while mustard oil has seen an increase of 25-27 rupees per kilogram. At the same time, prices are rising in the market due to a lack of supply. The reason for this is that not more than 9 lakh tonnes are being crushed every month.

According to reports, the demand for edible oils decreases after May-June, yet there are no signs of a decline in mustard prices. So far, government agencies have released only 1.25 lakh tonnes of mustard in the market in 40 days.
