2000 Rupees Note Exchange: Everyone still remembers the days of demonetization. On the night of November 8, 2021, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared 500 and 1000 rupee notes as pieces of paper. At the same time, a new 2000 rupee note entered the market. The arrival of this note caused a stir in the market. Everyone began questioning this note. After this, the RBI withdrew this note. In such a situation, the Reserve Bank of India has provided detailed information on what to do if you still have a 2000 rupee note.
After demonetization, new currency notes of 100, 200, 500, and 2000 rupees were introduced. The old 500 rupee note was substituted with a new version, while the 1000 rupee note was replaced by the new 2000 rupee note. Additionally, new 20 and 50 rupee notes have also been made available at banks.

What should you do with the Rs 2000 note?
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) posted on the social media platform X via its official account. In this post, the bank clarified that if you possess a 2000 rupee note, you can exchange it at your bank. The post mentions that if you still have a 2000 rupee note, this information is relevant to you. The Rs 2000 note is still completely valid as legal tender.

You can exchange it by visiting any of the 19 RBI issue offices
If you are unable to visit, you can send the note to any RBI issue office using India Post and have the amount credited to your bank account.
Over 98% of the notes have been returned
On May 19, 2023, when the RBI declared the withdrawal of 2000 rupee notes from circulation, a total of Rs 3.56 lakh crore worth of these notes were in circulation. As of April 30, 2026, only Rs 5,451 crore worth of notes remain in circulation. This indicates that 98.47% of these notes have been returned to the banking system. However, the RBI has provided details about the approximately 1.5% of notes that are still in circulation. Has the Rs 2000 note become worthless?
Most ₹2000 banknotes in circulation have already been returned, but if you still have one, here’s what you should know:

According to the Reserve Bank, the 2000 rupee note you possess has not lost its value. The RBI has explicitly stated that the 2000 rupee note will continue to be legal tender. This means its value is intact; only the regulations regarding its exchange have changed.
