WhatsApp New Pricing Rules 2026: There is a new update for WhatsApp users. You might be surprised to hear that sending messages on WhatsApp will now cost money—but this information is entirely accurate. It stems from new pricing documents released by Meta. Naturally, people are wondering if they will actually have to pay to send messages.

It is important to note that Meta has released these pricing documents for the commercial platform, WhatsApp Business API. Sending messages via this platform will incur a cost of 14 paise. Meta is implementing these billing rules for service and utility messaging starting tomorrow, October 1, 2026.

How much will the general public have to pay?
On the other hand, ordinary users might be wondering if they will now have to pay to send messages on WhatsApp. In reality, that is not the case. Regular users will continue to enjoy free messaging services on WhatsApp, just as before. You will not be charged anything even if you are chatting with a business account. This new billing system applies only to large corporate and enterprise-level Business API accounts.

Who has to pay for messages?
According to the details, WhatsApp will charge companies, banks, online shopping platforms, and large startups for every automated message they send to customers. This means that when you receive a balance alert from your bank, delivery updates from an e-commerce platform, or an OTP from a company, the business itself pays for these messages. All these payments go directly to Meta.

How much will Meta charge?

According to reports, Meta had previously implemented a system of charging for messages based on a 24-hour conversation model. A significant change to this system is set to take effect on October 1. Under these new rules, companies will be charged for “utility messages” sent within the customer support window and for “service messages” that exceed the free usage limit.

In practical terms, this means that every business number will be allotted 1,000 free messages per month for customer care and support purposes; once this limit is exhausted, a charge will apply to each subsequent message. Additionally, utility messages—which were previously free when sent within the 24-hour window following a customer’s message—will also incur charges starting October 1.

What are the charges?

According to Meta’s policies, the highest charges will apply to marketing messages; companies will have to pay approximately ₹0.86 per message for offers, sales, and promotional broadcasts. Meanwhile, a charge of approximately 11.5 paise per message will apply to service messages such as order status updates, delivery notifications, and login passwords (OTPs). Including GST, the total cost will come to 14 paise per message.
