New UPI Features: Nowadays, everyone uses UPI; it’s an integral part of daily life. But what if you need to make a payment and don’t have mobile internet? Furthermore, this eliminates the hassle of opening the UPI app, scanning a QR code, and entering a PIN. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced two new features—’Tap & Pay’ and ‘MyUPI’—to make the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) even more user-friendly. With ‘Tap & Pay,’ users can make payments by tapping an NFC-enabled phone against a POS machine. Meanwhile, ‘MyUPI’ aims to consolidate UPI-related information and customer support in one place.
Tap your phone to make a payment
NPCI launched the ‘Tap & Pay’ feature for UPI on September 10. To use it, you need an NFC-enabled smartphone. Users simply need to unlock their phone and tap it against a compatible POS terminal. A key advantage is that mobile internet isn’t required for this payment; the POS machine processes the transaction using its internet connection.

Even if you are at a shop and your phone lacks active data, the payment will still go through. However, this doesn’t mean UPI will work without internet everywhere; ‘Tap & Pay’ requires both the phone and the POS terminal to support the technology. The payment can only be completed if the POS machine is connected to the internet.
Make payments without entering a PIN?
Another notable aspect of ‘Tap & Pay’ concerns small-value transactions. You can make payments of up to ₹5,000 without entering a UPI PIN. This saves time at small stores by eliminating the need to enter a PIN repeatedly. However, for payments exceeding ₹5,000, entering the UPI PIN remains mandatory. This feature supports various types of UPI-linked accounts, including RuPay credit cards. This means small purchases could feel like a contactless card payment.
What ‘MyUPI’ Will Do
Along with ‘Tap and Pay,’ the NPCI has introduced the ‘MyUPI’ feature. This AI-based customer support platform is built on NPCI’s Small Language Model. Its objective is to consolidate various UPI-related information in one place. Currently, users may need to check different bank or UPI apps to find details about a specific transaction or an AutoPay mandate. ‘MyUPI’ is a major effort to simplify this process; it will let users access all UPI transaction and AutoPay mandate information in a single location. As a result, users may need to open fewer apps repeatedly.

More Information Before Payment
‘MyUPI’ will not be limited to displaying information; it will also provide additional beneficiary details before a payment is completed. This gives users more information about the recipient before transferring funds, helping reduce the risk of erroneous payments. Additionally, a ‘Replay’ feature will allow users to repeat past transactions.
New Safety Controls for UPI
The update focuses on more than convenience; it also adds safety features. A ‘Safety Switch’ will let users manage UPI debit transaction requests—a control that proves useful if they suspect their account has been compromised. Meanwhile, the ‘UPI Number Delink’ feature will allow users to disable the facility of receiving UPI payments via their mobile number. These measures are expected to give users greater control over their UPI usage.
According to the NPCI, ‘MyUPI’ will function as a layer of trust and control, with plans to include self-service options. On the other hand, if a user needs assistance regarding any UPI-related information or issue, the need to contact the bank or the app’s customer care for every minor detail may be reduced.
