Bank Holiday: Big update for bank customers. Banks will be closed today, Thursday. If you’re planning to visit a bank branch on October 29th, first find out if banks are open in your state. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) calendar, banks will be closed in some states Thursday. Here’s a breakdown of which states will be closed today and why.

Will Banks Open or Closed Today?

Based on the RBI calendar, banks will be closed today, Thursday, October 29th, in Himachal Pradesh due to Karva Chauth. All public and private sector banks, including State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, Canara, Axis, HDFC, and ICICI, will remain shut in that state. However, banks throughout all other states across the country will stay open despite Karva Chauth.

Banks will continue operating in several states, including Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Karnataka, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Arunachal Pradesh. Banks won’t be closed in these regions due to Karva Chauth.

Karva Chauth is an important Hindu festival observed by married women, particularly in North India. On this day, women fast from sunrise to moonrise, offering prayers for their husbands’ longevity, good health, and marital happiness.

Several mythological tales are connected to Karva Chauth. The story of Veeravati stands out prominently—according to this tale, her brothers deceived her into thinking the moon had risen, and after she broke her fast, her husband faced difficulties. Eventually, through Veeravati’s sincere prayers and devotion, her husband was restored. This narrative emphasizes the significance and spiritual power of the fast. During Karva Chauth, women consume Sargi in the morning, abstain from food all day, and in the evening pay respects to Karva Mata, Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Ganesha, and the Moon. Once the moon appears, they offer water to it, and after seeing their husband’s face, they end their fast by drinking water from his hands.
