Sugar Price: Good news is here. Great news for sugar shoppers as prices stabilize heading into the festive season! Retail sugar prices have dropped noticeably over the past month. Based on Chini Mandi rates, from August 22 to September 21, 2026, retail sugar prices in Delhi decreased from Rs 68 to Rs 53 per kg. Kanpur saw prices fall from Rs 69 to Rs 52, Raipur from Rs 68 to Rs 53, Mumbai from Rs 68 to Rs 53, and Ranchi from Rs 70 to Rs 54 per kg.
Kolkata experienced a drop from Rs 70 to Rs 54, Guwahati from Rs 71 to Rs 55, Hyderabad from Rs 70 to Rs 53, and Chennai from Rs 70 to Rs 56 per kg. Overall, retail prices have decreased by Rs 14 to Rs 17 per kg across major cities.
According to government data, sugar prices have eased from their recent peaks. The average retail price of sugar has dropped from roughly Rs 65 per kg in August to approximately Rs 58.50 per kg. Additionally, ex-mill prices have fallen by around 25%.

The wholesale market has also experienced significant price reductions. M-30 sugar wholesale prices in Delhi dropped from Rs 6,600 per quintal on August 22nd to Rs 4,900 on September 21st. Kanpur saw prices fall from Rs 6,650 to Rs 4,750, Mumbai from Rs 6,750 to Rs 4,800, and Kolkata from Rs 6,800 to Rs 5,000 per quintal.
Chennai also witnessed a decline from Rs 6,900 to Rs 5,400. Across different cities, wholesale prices have fallen by Rs 1,600 to Rs 2,000 per quintal.
Great news for bulk sugar consumers as the festive season rolls around! The government has bumped up the stock limit for bulk sugar consumers to 30 days. Keep in mind, though, that any extra stocks beyond 15 days can only come from eligible sugar imported through the Advance Authorization Scheme (AAS) and Tariff Rate Quota (TRQ). Sugar sourced from the domestic market will stick with the 15-day consumption stock limit, maintaining the same rules as before.
Industries play a major role in domestic sugar consumption
India’s yearly domestic sugar consumption is projected to reach around 28 to 28.5 million tonnes. During the 2025-26 sugarcane crushing season, sugar production was expected to hit approximately 28 million tonnes. Institutional buyers—including food and beverage companies, hotels, restaurants, catering services, and processed food manufacturers—make up roughly 60-65% of the total demand.
