Tensions are still high following the recent violence in Birbhum district, West Bengal. In response to the unrest, security forces have been stationed throughout the area. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the government has decided to suspend internet services in several parts of Sainthia city until March 17, which is a Monday. This suspension order was put into effect starting March 14. The violence reportedly erupted during Holi celebrations in Sainthia, with reports of stone pelting surfacing.
Internet services halted in Sainthia
To curb the spread of rumors, the administration has halted internet services in Sainthia. The government’s directive, issued under the Telecommunication Act 2023, states that any messages related to specific topics or groups will not be transmitted temporarily to maintain public order and prevent further incidents. However, voice calls and SMS will still be allowed.
The order is set to last until 8 am on March 17
The areas affected by the internet ban include Sainthia, Hatora, Mathpalasa, Harisara, Dariyapur, and Phulur. This order took effect immediately on March 14 and will remain in place until 8 am on March 17.
Importantly, there will be no restrictions on the publication and distribution of newspapers during this time to ensure that information continues to flow. Following the stone pelting incident in Birbhum, police presence has been increased in the impacted areas.
BJP has set its sights on Mamata’s government following a stone-pelting incident in Birbhum. BJP leader Amit Malviya took to X to express his concerns, stating, “Hindus were attacked for celebrating Holi in Birbhum! Under Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal is turning into a place like Bangladesh.”
The violence erupted during the vibrant celebrations of Dol Purnima and Holi in Anaipur village, located in the Kirnahar police station area of the Nanoor assembly constituency. The attack was reportedly instigated by a local Trinamool panchayat member, where a group of Muslims confronted Hindus for chanting “Jai Shri Ram,” even questioning their right to do so.
