Will Shubman Gill avilable for India vs South Africa 2nd Test?
Former India captain and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Sourav Ganguly visited him at the hospital and spoke with him for 15 minutes. Gill will now rest at the team hotel and his condition will be monitored by the BCCI medical team. Reports indicate that Gill’s neck pain has subsided and he has been advised to rest for four to five days. However, it is still unclear whether the star batsman will be able to participate in the second Test against South Africa, starting November 22 in Guwahati.
Earlier, India head coach Gautam Gambhir stated that Shubman Gill’s neck injury was being evaluated, and that the physiotherapist was expected to make a decision on his condition. Gill came in to bat after Washington Sundar’s dismissal on the first day of the Kolkata Test and played just three balls before leaving the field.
In Gill’s absence, his deputy Rishabh Pant captained the team during South Africa’s second innings. Gambhir told reporters, “He is still being assessed. So let’s see. The physio will take a decision this evening and we will decide tomorrow.”
Gill’s absence from the Test opened the door for the Proteas, who defeated India by 30 runs on Sunday. Spinner Simon Harmer performed brilliantly, taking eight wickets in the match, while Temba Bavuma scored a half-century in the second innings. South Africa now leads the two-match series 1-0. This was India’s first defeat at Eden Gardens in England since December 2012.
