Bangladesh Lifts Broadcast Ban on IPL: Ahead of the commencement of the Indian Premier League, Bangladesh’s newly elected government has taken a major decision. The Bangladeshi government has completely lifted the ban previously imposed on the live telecast of the IPL 2026 season. Consequently, people in Bangladesh will now be able to enjoy the Indian Premier League as well.
Bangladesh’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Zahir Uddin, officially announced this development. Notably, following the departure of Sheikh Hasina, religious violence had flared up in Bangladesh during the tenure of the caretaker government, leading to strained relations with India.
At that time, the Bangladeshi government had not only refused permission for its national team to play ICC T20 World Cup matches in India but had also withdrawn its participation from the tournament entirely. However, the new government has now overturned the decision made by the caretaker administration. This move is being viewed as the beginning of a renewed strengthening of ties between the two nations.
Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Makes the Announcement
On March 28—today—just hours before the start of the new IPL season, the new government of Bangladesh took a significant step by revoking the previously imposed broadcast ban. Bangladesh’s Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Zahir Uddin Swapon, personally confirmed this development. He stated, “No entity has submitted an application to us for broadcasting the IPL. We do not wish to mix politics with sports.”
He added, “We will view this from a commercial perspective; if any channel applies for the rights to broadcast the IPL, we will give it positive consideration.” Furthermore, he affirmed that the government would not prevent any channel from broadcasting the IPL. Bangladesh took this decision just as the IPL was about to get underway. This move is being regarded as a diplomatically positive step aimed at bridging the rift that had emerged between the two countries.
When Was the Ban Imposed?
The interim caretaker government—formed amidst the violence that erupted following Sheikh Hasina’s departure from the country—had imposed the ban on the broadcasting of the IPL in Bangladesh as recently as January of this year. A few days later, general elections were held to elect a regular government; in these elections, Tariq Rahman secured a landslide victory and subsequently became the country’s new Prime Minister.
A representative of the Government of India also attended his swearing-in ceremony. Moreover, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Tariq Rahman over the phone to congratulate him on his victory. It was from that moment on that the ice began to thaw in the relations between Bangladesh and India.
