Modak Making Tips: This year, when Ganpati Bappa comes home on August 26, why not feed him something special? The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi, which lasts for 10 days, is incomplete without Bappa’s favourite laddus and modaks. This time, instead of buying the market-sold modaks, try making traditional Ukdiche Modaks at home. These are not only delicious in taste, but are also very easy to make.

Ingredients required to make Ukdiche Modak:

Rice flour: 2 cups

Grated coconut: 2 cups

Jaggery: 1 cup (finely chopped)

Desi ghee: 2 tsp

Cardamom powder: 1/2 tsp

Salt: 1/2 tsp

Method of making:

Prepare the stuffing (puran):

First, heat 1 tsp of ghee in a pan.

Add grated coconut to it and fry lightly.

When the aroma starts to develop, add jaggery and mix well.

Cook on medium flame till the jaggery and coconut mixture thickens.

When the mixture thickens, add the cardamom powder and turn off the gas. Your stuffing is ready.

Prepare the cover (shell) of modak:

In another vessel, heat 1 teaspoon of ghee, add half a teaspoon of salt, and 2 cups of water, then boil.

When the water boils, reduce the flame and add rice flour slowly while stirring continuously.

When the dough is lukewarm, transfer it to a large bowl and knead it well, until it becomes soft and smooth.

Make and steam modaks:

Make small balls of kneaded dough.

Place each ball on the palm and make it round and flat. Then, press in the middle with the help of your thumb and fingers to give it a cup-like shape.

Fill it with the prepared coconut-jaggery stuffing.

Now, make small pleats from the edges and close the top of the modak, giving it a pointed shape.

Steam these modaks in a steamer for about 20 minutes.

That’s it, your hot and tasty Ukdiche Modaks are ready for bhog! This time, definitely offer this special prasad, made with your own hands, to Bappa and double the fun of the festival.
