Ration Card Update: If you are a ration card holder, this news is significant for you. The government has announced the cancellation of certain ration cards, a decision that comes as a major blow to cardholders. Once the government cancels a ration card, the holder will no longer receive rations. The Jharkhand government has taken this decision.
The state government intends to cancel ration cards belonging to individuals who have not collected rations from PDS shops for the past six months; these individuals are classified as “silent cardholders”. Following this announcement, the cards of such holders will be temporarily deactivated starting October 1.
This means that from October 1 onwards, these cardholders will be unable to collect food grains. Cardholders who have not collected rations for six months have been given a deadline of September 21; if they collect their rations by this date, their cards will not be deactivated.
State Government to Issue Notification
“Silent cardholders” have until September 21 to collect their rations; failure to do so by the deadline will result in the cancellation of their ration cards starting October 1. The Jharkhand government will soon release official information regarding this matter to ensure beneficiaries receive timely updates.
Who Are the Non-Collecting Cardholders?
Many individuals obtained ration cards solely to avail themselves of benefits from schemes like Ayushman Bharat and the Maiya Samman Yojana, without actually collecting rations from PDS shops. Preparations are underway to identify such cardholders and deactivate their cards, thereby eliminating fraudulent or inactive beneficiaries.
For context, the central ministry has issued a gazette notification regarding the temporary deactivation of such “silent” ration cards and has mandated that their e-KYC be completed within the next three months. Previously, a central notification issued in July 2025 had directed state governments to temporarily deactivate the ration cards of individuals who had not collected rations from PDS shops for six months.

However, those who do not complete their e-KYC by September 21 will be granted a three-month window—from October 1 to January 1, 2027—to complete the process. During this period, they will be required to complete their e-KYC through field approval.
