Plastic Note: Big update revealed Plastic Note. The Reserve Bank of India’s announcement about introducing plastic currency notes has generated a lot of anticipation. Governor Sanjay Malhotra has now disclosed the timeline without delay. Following the MPC meeting, the governor shared that plastic 10 and 20 rupee notes are set to be released at the start of the upcoming fiscal year. Additionally, there are plans for larger denominations like 100 and 500 rupee notes to be issued in polymer material, along with smaller values.

The RBI Governor has outlined the objective to roll out polymer notes around April 2027, coinciding with the new fiscal year. Preparations are in progress for launching polymer notes in 10 and 20 rupee denominations. The RBI aims to circulate these new notes alongside the traditional paper currency. The intention is to maintain a coexistence of both types of currency. Polymer notes are preferred for their durability, which reduces the need for frequent reprints and leads to cost savings.

Further down the line, there are plans to introduce 100 and 500 rupee polymer notes. The Governor has made it clear that once the plastic 10 and 20 rupee notes prove successful, the 100 and 500 rupee notes will follow suit. Despite a previous unsuccessful attempt in 2009, the RBI is determined to make polymer notes a success this time. Polymer notes offer advantages such as moisture resistance, prolonged circulation due to their durability, and resistance to tearing, making them a cost-effective choice.

The decision to initially launch polymer notes in 10 and 20 rupee denominations is strategic, as these notes constitute a significant portion of the currency in circulation. Although they represent only a small fraction of the total, around 1.4 percent, they were chosen for the pilot project to ensure the smooth introduction of polymer notes into circulation. Once the polymer 10 and 20 rupee notes are ready, they will be distributed through bank branches and ATMs, coexisting with the existing paper notes.
