Due to this lake, the risk of flooding has increased in the lower areas of the river. The police administration immediately swung into action and appealed to the people living on the riverbanks to move to safer places.
What happened?
According to the report of the Ministry of Water Power, Government of India, three cloudburst incidents occurred in Uttarkashi within just two and a half hours on Tuesday.
First cloudburst: near the Kheerganga river at 1 pm.
The debris and water in the river due to this destroyed 15 houses and 6-7 shops. Many people are reported to be missing.
Second cloudburst: near Sukki Top between Harshil and Gangani at 3 pm.
The damage caused here is still being ascertained.
Third cloud burst: 3:30 pm in Tel Gad near Harshil Army Camp.
This incident created flood-like conditions. Due to these incidents, the flow of the Bhagirathi River stopped, and a large lake was formed. The helipad at Harshil has also been submerged in water due to the lake's water.
This has happened before as well
This is not the first time that the flow has stopped due to debris in the rivers. On June 28, a cloud burst in the Silai Band area of Yamunaghati, due to which the Kupda Gad river was in spate.
The debris of this river stopped the flow of Yamuna river and a lake was formed in Syanachatti. Then the lower floors of many hotels and houses were flooded.
At present, this temporary lake is being constantly monitored and the administration is taking every necessary step so that no major disaster occurs.
Everyone has been appealed to be alert and follow the instructions of the administration.
