Petrol Price Hike: Petrol and diesel prices have been steadily rising. If you expect prices to drop in the near future, you would be mistaken, as the price of crude oil has once again crossed the $100 mark. In fact, the price of the crude oil basket imported by India had already risen to $117.4 per barrel by September 21, 2026, compared to an average of around $66 per barrel in the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Global crude oil prices are continuously climbing due to escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia and the crisis in the Strait of Hormou. Recently, crude oil prices have reached a range of $100 to $115 per barrel. However, according to government sources, there will be no hike in petrol and diesel prices in India.
Today’s Crude Oil Prices
On September 24, 2026, crude oil prices in the international market dipped slightly. Nevertheless, prices remain above the psychological threshold of $100 per barrel. Today, Brent crude is trading at $102.18 per barrel—a marginal decline of about 1.18%—while US crude oil is currently trading in the $91.68 to $92.00 per barrel range.
Will Petrol and Diesel Prices Rise?
While crude oil prices are rising due to tensions in West Asia, government sources have confirmed that there will be no immediate hike in petrol and diesel prices.
Given the potential for volatility in global crude oil prices, the government is prioritising energy security. To this end, the government may provide oil marketing companies with subsidies, enabling them to absorb the pressure of rising costs.
Relief for the Common Man
Despite the sharp surge in crude oil prices, the general public in India is finding relief regarding petrol and diesel prices. Prices remain stable, and this relief is proving to be a source of trouble for state-owned oil marketing companies (IOC, BPCL, HPCL).
