LPG Update: Starting from October 1st, individuals will need to undergo biometric authentication to secure subsidized domestic LPG cylinders. Those who have not completed their Aadhaar biometric verification must do so before purchasing a cylinder at the subsidized rate to avoid any subsidy-related issues.

The government states that the majority of active domestic LPG consumers, around 274.3 million (89.9%), have already undergone biometric Aadhaar authentication and do not need to repeat the process for future LPG bookings. The authentication process can be conveniently completed at home.

Consumers have various options for completing Aadhaar authentication:
– Through the delivery person’s mobile app during LPG cylinder delivery
– By visiting the LPG distributor’s showroom
– Using the mobile app of the respective OMC from home
– Indane consumers can use Indian Oil One, Bharat Gas consumers can use HelloBPCL, and HP Gas consumers can use HP PAY app for the process.

Consumers who do not wish to or cannot undergo biometric Aadhaar authentication can still receive LPG at market prices without subsidy by indicating their preference through their OMC’s digital channels like mobile apps, WhatsApp chatbot, IVRS, etc. The availability of 5 kg or 10 kg cylinders is subject to local availability.

The original deadline for completing biometric Aadhaar authentication was June 30, 2026, but it was extended multiple times to September 14, 2026, to allow consumers more time. The government communicated extensively through SMS, WhatsApp messages, and special campaigns since October 2023 to encourage completion of biometric Aadhaar authentication.

The government highlights that the subsidy on a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder was approximately Rs 210 per cylinder in September 2026, increasing from around Rs 721 in June 2026. The government has allocated Rs 22,000 crore to OMCs for LPG subsidies in FY 2022-23, with an additional Rs 30,000 crore provided in FY 2025-26 and FY 2026-27. To avoid any disruptions, domestic LPG consumers are urged to complete biometric authentication before October 1.
