Bank Strike: Big update for common people. If you have important banking tasks to accomplish at the end of September, this information is crucial for you. The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has declared a three-day nationwide strike starting on September 28th, which coincides with the weekend, potentially disrupting bank operations for five consecutive days.
This strike is particularly concerning as it falls during the half-yearly closing of banks, causing inconvenience for regular customers and businesses. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the government has taken action.
The Finance Ministry has convened an emergency meeting regarding the bank strike. The Secretary of the Department of Financial Services (DFS) will meet with the heads of public sector and regional rural banks to discuss arrangements ensuring the continuity of essential banking services during the strike. The government’s objective is to guarantee that the public can access cash and online services without any disruptions during the strike.
Tasks that may be impacted during the strike include:
– Clearance of cheques could be delayed.
– Cash deposits or withdrawals from bank counters may face significant challenges.
– Services like making bank drafts, updating passbooks, and opening new accounts will be unavailable.
– Processes such as loan approvals, file handling, and documentation will come to a standstill.
Fortunately, online services like UPI, net banking, and ATMs will remain operational, allowing for uninterrupted digital banking services.
Regarding recent events and demands:
– Bank unions staged a nationwide strike on September 11th, affecting services at public sector banks, while digital services continued without interruption.
– The United Forum of Bank Unions, representing around 90% of banking employees, is pushing for a five-day work week and opposing the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for senior officers.
– If their demands are not met, a potential indefinite bank strike is looming from October.
In case the government and the Indian Banks Association (IBA) fail to address the employees’ demands post the September 28 strike, the unrest is set to escalate, with plans for a five-day protest from September 26 to 30, and an indefinite strike starting on October 26.
