The controversy involving Nitish Rana unfolded during the 19th over of the Delhi Capitals’ innings. Specifically, Rana—who was seated in the dugout—became embroiled in a prolonged argument with the fourth umpire on the field. Rana was displeased with the decision denying Tristan Stubbs permission to change his gloves; this disagreement led to a heated and lengthy exchange of words between him and the fourth umpire. It was during this moment that Nitish Rana lost his composure and used inappropriate language, which was subsequently reported by the umpires.
Clashing with the Umpire Proves Costly
In light of IPL regulations, Nitish Rana’s altercation with the umpire has come at a steep price. The offence pertains to the use of abusive language during the match. For this Level 1 offence, he has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee. Additionally, one demerit point has been added to his disciplinary record, which could serve as grounds for even stricter sanctions against him in the future.
Meanwhile, this also marked the team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct. This specific article relates to minimum over-rate offences. Consequently, Ruturaj Gaikwad was also fined ₹12 lakh.
Paying the Price for Misconduct
Furthermore, during the hearing conducted before the Match Referee, Nitish Rana admitted to his transgression. Along with this, he has also accepted the imposed sanctions. In cases involving a Level 1 breach, the Match Referee’s decision is considered final and binding.
