Electricity Bill Hike: Common people gets another major shock. After Petrol, Diesel,LPG, now Electricity also become expensive. The people of Uttar Pradesh have been dealt a severe blow amid the rising heat. Already troubled by the rising prices of petrol, diesel, and milk, they are now also facing the shock of increased electricity bills.
The Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) has decided to impose an extra charge of up to 10 percent on electricity bills. This means that for every 100 rupees of your bill, you will now have to pay 10 rupees more. This increased price will be added to the June bill, marking the biggest increase so far.
Why did electricity become expensive?
UPPCL says that this year’s heat is intense, causing electricity demand to reach record levels. Additionally, coal and gas prices have risen significantly worldwide, forcing the company to purchase expensive electricity from outside. To offset this loss, the company has decided to collect the remaining 10% charge from March in the June bill. Officials say this charge may be further increased in the future.

Double whammy on the public
This year, due to record-breaking heat, people have been using air conditioners and coolers extensively. This has already led to high electricity consumption, and now, with the 10% extra charge, the June bill will completely ruin people’s budgets. People in rural areas are already suffering from power cuts, and in cities, smart meters are causing problems. This increased bill has only compounded the common man’s problems.
Opposition to the decision
This increase in electricity bills has sparked widespread protests. Awadhesh Verma, president of the Uttar Pradesh State Electricity Consumer Council, has strongly objected. He says that electricity companies already owe consumers crores of rupees. Furthermore, how can bills be increased until that money is accounted for? The Consumer Council has made it clear that they will appeal this decision to the regulatory commission and demand public relief.
Check if the purchase was made at Rs 5.86 per unit instead of Rs 4.94
The State Electricity Consumer Council has opposed the order for an increase in the fuel surcharge. Council President Awadhesh Kumar Verma has demanded Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to investigate the entire matter. It has been alleged that the Power Corporation is quietly preparing to recover nearly Rs 1,400 crore of old dues from the past two years.
In the tariff order of the Electricity Regulatory Commission, the actual cost of electricity purchase was approved at Rs 4.94 per unit, whereas the Power Corporation has imposed an additional burden of about Rs 1610 crore on consumers by showing electricity purchases at a rate of about Rs 5.86 per unit in March 2026.
The Council Chairman has demanded a detailed investigation into under what circumstances and from which private power-producing companies the expensive electricity was purchased in March 2026. He also stated that the electricity companies already have a surplus of over Rs 51,000 crore from consumers. In such a situation, no additional burden can be imposed on consumers.
