The Railway Ministry has introduced new guidelines permitting the carriage of oversized sports gear on trains, with exceptions for some equipment. A recent circular issued by the Railway Ministry outlines regulations for non-standard and delicate sports equipment.
What sports equipment can be transported?
Under the updated regulations, javelins and other bulky sports gear can be taken on trains by paying the specified freight charges. These items will receive priority placement in the luggage compartment, ensuring a hassle-free journey for athletes. The Ministry clarified that the standard weight limit for luggage does not apply to sports equipment.
Equipment not permitted:
Pole-vault poles are excluded from the new provisions due to safety concerns related to their length and technical requirements, making them unsuitable for transportation in passenger coaches.
Items prohibited for train transport:
Certain items are not allowed on trains, including
– Prohibition on carrying petrol, diesel, or any flammable substances.
– Restrictions on transporting firecrackers and gunpowder.
– Ban on transporting gas cylinders.
– Carrying weapons or hazardous materials will incur penalties.
It is important to note that carrying prohibited items on trains can lead to penalties and potential fines.
Pole vault did not find a place because
Regarding the pole vault pole, the circular states that it is not possible to transport it in any type of train coach and therefore, it has not been granted an exemption. The pole is quite long, making it difficult to carry. Therefore, it cannot be transported safely.
The Railways has stated that athletes can carry javelins and other heavy sports equipment on trains, subject to payment of a fixed freight fee. This will allow them to be carried on trains on a priority basis. The Ministry has clarified that existing commercial circulars setting maximum weight limits for baggage will not apply to sports equipment, provided parcel inspection verifies that the items being carried are indeed sports equipment. These can be placed in the luggage compartment.
