Indian Railways: The first freight EMU in the country, inspired by the Vande Bharat train and capable of reaching speeds of 130 kmph, is nearing the start of its commercial operations. This freight train, designed to also run at 130 kmph, has undergone successful trial runs. It is currently undergoing final trials, including ‘oscillation trials’ overseen by RDSO, to assess various parameters.
Once the remaining trial runs are completed, the commercial operation of this freight EMU will commence. The positive outcomes have prompted the Railways to explore the development of similar freight EMUs.
Exceeding passenger trains
Officials have highlighted that this freight train will be the first to achieve speeds of 130 km/h, surpassing many passenger trains. It is envisioned to operate on routes such as Delhi-NCR and Mumbai. The Chairman of Texmaco believes that this partnership will create a strong platform of global standards in India, which will change the face of the transport sector of the country.At present, the share of Railways in total goods transport in India is only 27%, which the Railway Ministry wants to rapidly increase to 45%.
Unique features
This innovative freight train, with 16 coaches, will travel at 130 km per hour, outpacing numerous passenger trains. Each coach is furnished with roller beds for efficient loading and unloading. The train boasts large automatic doors and a carrying capacity of up to 397 tons. Trials are currently utilizing sandbags. Manufactured at the Rail Coach Factory in Chennai, the train will feature reefers, ford ventilation, and chillers to transport perishable items at controlled temperatures. Additionally, sensors in each coach monitor the train’s speed, weight, and security features.
Private companies will now operate and lease freight trains in India. Kolkata-based Texmaco, France’s Tox, and America’s Trinity Rail have formed a major joint venture to achieve this. With the entry of private players, anyone can now rent freight trains based on their needs. Under this new leasing venture, now any private company or business house will be able to easily hire an entire goods train and transport its goods to every corner of the country.
