New Delhi: Student activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, accused of conspiring to incite riots in Delhi, have suffered a major setback from the Supreme Court. The apex court has rejected the bail applications of both accused. They will now remain in jail. The remaining 5 accused have received relief from the court.
The Supreme Court emphasised that considering national security and public order is far more important than the fact that the accused have been in jail for a long period before the trial has even begun. A bench of Justices Arvind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria delivered this verdict on Monday.

The defence had argued that the fact that the accused had been in jail for more than five years before the start of the trial should be grounds for bail. However, the court rejected their bail applications, delivering a significant blow to their case.
