Taiwan Earthquake – Magnitude 6.1 Quake Shakes Taiwan; Tremors Felt in Japan, China and Philippines

Taiwan Earthquake Today: A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck southeastern Taiwan on Wednesday evening. The quake registered 6.1 on the Richter scale. No casualties or significant damage have been reported so far. The tremors shook skyscrapers in the capital city of Taipei. According to the Central Weather Administration (CWA), the epicentre was located 10.1 kilometres north of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 11.9 kilometres. The tremors were also felt in China, the Philippines, and Japan.

According to the Central Weather Administration, alerts have been issued in several areas, including Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Tainan. The earthquake’s intensity was measured at four on Taiwan’s seven-level scale in Hualien and Pingtung counties.

According to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration and global monitoring agencies, two separate tremors of different magnitudes were felt on the island. According to Reuters, the first tremor had a magnitude of 5.7. The epicentre of this earthquake was only 10 kilometres below the surface in Taipei. Due to the shallow depth, the tremors were felt very strongly. The second tremor, with a magnitude of 6.1, was recorded in Taitung County, located on Taiwan’s southeastern coast.
