New Delhi: While summer asserts its dominance across most of India, a curious weather phenomenon is playing out – some states are experiencing sporadic rain and even snowfall!

The capital, Delhi, is already feeling the brunt of the rising temperatures, with highs expected to touch 34 degrees Celsius. The ever-changing weather patterns in Delhi-NCR are a microcosm of the contrasting weather conditions gripping the nation.

Heatwave Concerns Mount as Temperatures Rise

As March draws to a close, winter has bid farewell to most of India, making way for the relentless heat. Major concerns are brewing regarding potential heatwaves in the coming months.

Scattered Showers Bring Relief to Some

The good news is that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted rain showers in some parts of the country today, March 21st. Light to moderate rain is expected in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and the Gangetic plains of West Bengal.

Bihar, in particular, has recently witnessed heavy downpours in several districts. The IMD has issued a rain warning for the Gangetic plains of West Bengal on March 22nd and 23rd. Residents of Bihar can expect some respite from the heat, with light rain forecast to continue in many districts until March 25th.

Hill Stations Brace for Snowfall

Moving to the higher reaches, the IMD has predicted both light and heavy rain, accompanied by thunder, lightning, and even hailstorms in some parts of the Himalayas today.

There’s also a possibility of scattered light rain or snowfall in the Western Himalayan regions from March 21st to 24th. During this period, states like Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand might experience some precipitation.

Arunachal Pradesh, on the other hand, is bracing for heavy rain and snowfall in many areas on March 21st and 23rd.

Alerts Issued for Punjab, Haryana, and Western Uttar Pradesh

The IMD has issued light rain advisories for Punjab (March 21st, 22nd, and 24th), Haryana, and western Uttar Pradesh (March 24th). Jharkhand can also expect some light rain with thunderstorms and lightning today.

Staying Safe in the Face of Unpredictable Weather

With such contrasting weather patterns across the country, it’s crucial to stay updated on the latest forecasts from the IMD. Here are some additional tips to stay safe during this period:

  • Heatwave Precautions: If you reside in an area experiencing scorching heat, prioritize staying hydrated by consuming plenty of fluids throughout the day. Opt for loose, cotton clothing and avoid strenuous activity during peak heat hours.
  • Rain Preparedness: For those in areas with rain predictions, ensure your drainage systems are clear to prevent waterlogging. Carry an umbrella or raincoat if venturing outdoors.
  • Hill Station Safety: If you’re planning a trip to the hills, be mindful of the possibility of snowfall and treacherous road conditions. Pack accordingly and check weather updates frequently.
