Sheetla Mata Temple Stampede – A major tragedy struck the Sheetala Mata temple in the Nalanda district of Bihar on Tuesday. Indeed, this grave incident occurred on Tuesday—specifically Sheetala Ashtami—marking the final Tuesday of the month of Chaitra. Eight women lost their lives in a stampede triggered by overcrowding within the temple premises, while more than six devotees sustained severe injuries.

All injured devotees have been admitted to the hospital, leading to a chaotic situation within the medical facility as well. Following this major tragedy, the administration took immediate action to close down both the temple and the associated fair, and efforts are currently underway to bring the situation under control.

So far, only two of the deceased have been identified: Rita Devi, the wife of Dinesh Rajak—a resident of Sakunt Bihar—and Rekha Devi, the wife of Kamlesh Prasad—a resident of Mathurapur in Noorsarai. The process of identifying the remaining victims is still ongoing.

On the occasion of Sheetala Saptami,a massive crowd of devotees had gathered at the temple. The turnout was particularly heavy as the day fell on a Tuesday, leading to sudden panic and chaos among the people. Several individuals fell to the ground during the ensuing stampede, resulting in the fatalities.

The primary causes of this tragedy were the surging crowds and the subsequent stampede. Upon receiving news of the incident,Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed his condolences and announced compensation for the families of the deceased. He declared that each victim’s family would receive financial assistance totaling ₹6 lakh—comprising ₹4 lakh from the Disaster Management Department and ₹2 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

This tragedy raises serious questions regarding the administrative arrangements and crowd management protocols. An investigation into the incident is currently underway; efforts to locate individuals who are still missing are ongoing, alongside the continuing process of identifying the deceased.
