Meghalaya Coal Mine Update: A massive dynamite explosion in an illegal coal mine in a remote area of the East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya on Thursday has so far claimed the lives of 16 people. The powerful blast caused panic in the area. Several labourers are also reported to have been injured in the accident. Officials suspect that more labourers may be trapped under the debris, raising fears that the death toll could rise. It is being said that the explosion was so powerful that the labourers working inside the mine did not even get a chance to escape. Following the accident, chaos ensued at the site, and local residents and the administration immediately launched rescue and relief operations.

How did the accident happen?
The coal mine explosion has created a chaotic situation. Initial investigations suggest the explosion was caused by a gas leak or by illegal mining. Everyone is currently awaiting official confirmation. This tragic incident has once again highlighted the issues of worker safety and illegal mining in Meghalaya’s coal mines. Rescue teams are engaged in search operations, and the incident occurred in the Thangskai area in the morning.
It is reported that 16 bodies have been recovered so far. The exact number of labourers present inside the mine at the time of the explosion is not yet known. It is feared that more people may be trapped. According to preliminary reports, illegal mining was being carried out on a hill. The hill collapsed due to the explosion, trapping several miners working there.

It is worth noting that the National Green Tribunal had banned dangerous ‘rat-hole’ coal mining in Meghalaya in April 2014 due to its illegal and unscientific nature. Justice Brojendra Prasad Katakey, who was appointed by the Meghalaya High Court to monitor coal-related cases, had stated that despite the government’s assurances to stop such illegal activities, illegal coal mining and transportation continue in the state.
