CNG Price Hike Today: Mumbai Faces Inflation Shock as CNG Gets Costlier, See New Rates

: Across the country, the spiral of inflation has been gaining momentum steadily in recent times, directly impacting the pockets of ordinary citizens. First, the rising cost of commercial gas cylinders, followed by petrol, diesel, and CNG, has thrown everyone’s household budget into disarray. As fuel becomes more expensive, the prices of other commodities have also begun to rise.

In Mumbai—the country’s financial capital—residents received another shock of inflation late last night. CNG prices in the city have been hiked once again. This marks the second increase in CNG rates within a span of just 15 days. Consequently, it is now anticipated that fares for CNG-powered vehicles will also become more expensive.

How Much Have CNG Prices Risen?

In Mumbai, CNG prices have gone up for the second time within 15 days. Mahanagar Gas Limited delivered this shock to the public on Friday by announcing the new rates. Effective from midnight on May 30, the price of CNG has been increased by ₹2 per kilogram. Following this hike, the price of CNG in Mumbai has risen from ₹84 to ₹86 per kilogram.

Domestic Piped Natural Gas (PNG) has also become more expensive, rising by ₹0.50 per standard cubic meter (SCM). This price hike is expected to impact approximately 1.2 million CNG-powered vehicles—a figure that includes around 280,000 auto-rickshaws. Additionally, 3.1 million households with PNG connections will also be affected by this price increase.

Difficulties Set to Increase for These Groups

The rise in CNG prices in Mumbai is now likely to take a toll on people’s finances. It is anticipated that fares for auto-rickshaws, taxis, and mini-metro e-rickshaws will also be hiked in the near future. Once fares increase, the financial burden on the daily commute of common citizens will inevitably rise.

CNG Still Cheaper Than Petrol and Diesel

For the sake of information, it is worth noting that CNG remains cheaper than petrol and diesel. According to various unions, the continuously rising fuel prices are adversely affecting the earnings of drivers. Nevertheless, despite the recent price hikes, CNG continues to be a more affordable fuel option compared to both petrol and diesel. In Mumbai, using CNG results in savings of approximately 45% compared to petrol and about 12% compared to diesel.
