SUV enthusiasts in India have demonstrated a robust purchase interest again. Recent May 2025 sales statistics confirm that the SUV market continues to lead the way. Right from the popular names such as Maruti, Hyundai, and Mahindra to up-and-coming names such as Toyota and Kia, the monthly statistics show us which models captured buyers’ attention and which lost steam.
Maruti Brezza Leads the Way
Maruti Suzuki Brezza claimed the number-one position in SUV sales for May 2025. It registered a 10% year-on-year increase, reaching 15,566 units compared to 14,186 units sold in May 2024. This performance made Brezza the top-selling SUV for the month and helped Maruti strengthen its grip in the compact SUV category.
Hyundai Creta and Mahindra Scorpio Follow Closely
Hyundai Creta took the second spot with 14,860 units delivered, registering a 1% increase compared to previous year. Mahindra Scorpio followed at the third position with 14,401 unit deliveries with a 5% annual rise. Both SUVs are good picks in their segments, capturing buyers’ attention with their performance and features.
Maruti Fronx and Tata Punch in the Fray
Maruti Suzuki Fronx attained the fourth spot with 13,584 sales, registering a 7% year-on-year increase. On the other hand, Tata Punch took the fifth spot with 13,133 units sold. Tata Punch, however, saw a dismal 31% dip in sales from the previous year, indicating a change in market preferences.
Tata Nexon and Mahindra Thar Maintain Their Ground
Tata Nexon took the sixth position with 13,096 units sold, witnessing a healthy 14% growth. Mahindra Thar staged a dramatic return with 10,389 units sold, a phenomenal 81% sales hike. The tough looks of Thar and a strong fan following might have helped this spectacular boost.
Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO, and Toyota Hyryder bring the list
Kia Sonet ranked eighth with 8,054 units and achieved an 8% yearly growth. Mahindra XUV 3XO placed ninth with sales of 7,952 units but registered a 20% fall in demand. Toyota Hyryder, which occupied the tenth spot with 7,573 units, experienced a remarkable 94% rise in sales compared to last year.
Toyota Hyryder Leads in Yearly Growth
In the top 10 SUVs, Toyota Hyryder saw a growth of 94%, which was the highest growth and the most sought-after model in terms of increased popularity. This translates to the fact that consumers are now looking for newer choices over conventional segment dominators.
Mahindra Thar Sees Massive Comeback
Mahindra Thar’s 81% increase in annual sales ranks it among the fastest-growing SUVs in the list. Its off-road capability and solid road presence seem to be the winning factors as more customers move to lifestyle SUVs.
