1. Navigate to UIDAI’s Website
Primarily, UIDAI’s unique identification authority of India website www.uidai.gov.in is visited.
2. Login to Aadhaar
On the homepage, you will see an option for Update Aadhaar. Clicking on it, you will be redirected to the Aadhaar Update Portal. You are needed to log in with your 12-digit Aadhaar number and captcha code for further processing.
3.Select Information for Update
After logging in, you are presented with options to update details like your name, address, date of birth, gender, etc. Select Name for the change in surname. You are to provide the correct surname as per new marital status.
4.Upload a Document
To validate your change request, the system will ask you to upload a supporting document. In the case of a surname change after marriage, it requires an uploaded scanned copy of the marriage certificate. Ensure that the document is readable.
5.Enter New Details
After uploading supported documents, enter your new surname exactly as you requested on your Aadhaar card.
6.Pay Update Fees
A fee is charged for updating Aadhaar details. The present fee for requesting any update is ₹50, excluding GST. A payment is to be made through any of the online payment methods.
7.Submit your Request
The request to be approved is submitted after appropriate details are filled and the fee is paid. In case of details being accurate, approve your request.
8.Confirmation and Update
Once submitted, the request will receive confirmation, an acknowledgment receipt, and an Update Request Number (URN). Keep this safe because with this number, you will be able to track the status of the update request.
9.Receipt of Updated Aadhaar
The Aadhaar card update will be updated, and after the completion of the process, the updated Aadhaar card will be dispatched to your registered address. You can also download an electronic copy of your updated Aadhaar (e-Aadhaar) from the UIDAI website.
Important Points to Remember
Ensure that your marriage certificate has been issued in an unambiguous and permissible language. This document is vital for proving your name change; thus, a legible copy is a must.
If the online procedure is proving too difficult for you, you could also visit an Aadhaar Enrollment Centre, where a member of the staff will assist you in completing the change.
Please be patient after submitting the application, since there are times when it might take a few weeks for the updated Aadhaar card to reach your location. Just wait for the process to be completed, and the new card will be sent to you.
