FSDA New Rules: The Food Safety and Drug Administration of Uttar Pradesh has implemented stringent measures in response to complaints about significant price disparities between the cost of medicines and the prices charged to patients in hospitals and retail outlets in the state.

Details about FSDA New Rules

Per the recent directive from FSDA Commissioner Dr. Roshan Jacob, all retail pharmacies, including those within hospital premises, are mandated to disclose comprehensive drug pricing information on their official websites. This initiative aims to promote transparency in drug pricing and safeguard patients from being overcharged.

Key points of the new rules include:

Requirement for pharmacies to publish details of purchase and selling prices of medicines on their websites.
Enhanced regulations for pharmacies on hospital grounds, where patients rely on them for medication and medical supplies. Emphasis on displaying manufacturer details, brand names, generic names, purchase prices, and patient sales rates on pharmacy websites. Recent developments have stirred political debate on the issue, particularly in light of a drug misappropriation scandal, which has been strongly criticized by Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav.

The FSDA is determined to combat counterfeiting and adulteration by addressing significant price gaps between purchase prices and maximum retail prices (MRP) of drugs. This measure is expected to mitigate the risk of substandard, counterfeit, or adulterated drugs entering the market.

Additional requirements for transparency include the display of pharmacist information, license details, and regular stock updates on pharmacy websites. Furthermore, guidelines mandate the inclusion of pharmacist registration details, license numbers, and premises addresses, along with weekly stock updates.

To enhance accessibility for patients, FSDA has instructed the prominent display of QR codes or mobile app links at pharmacy counters. This will enable patients to scan the QR code with their mobile devices, granting them direct access to the pharmacy’s website for real-time information on medication pricing.
