The 56th meeting of the GST Council was held on September 3-4, 2025, in which the Centre and the states decided to make major changes in the rates and slabs of Goods and Services Tax (GST).
The GST was changed to a two-tier structure of 5% and 18%, with the highest rate of 40% for ultra-luxury and ‘sin goods’, effective September 22, 2025. This replaced the four slabs of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% that were in effect from July 1, 2017.
