EPFO Refund: Good news for EPFO members. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) is currently working on the automatic transfer of long-standing unclaimed funds to the accounts of millions of its members. Reports indicate that over 100,000 EPFO members may soon see their unclaimed PF balances transferred automatically to their accounts.
As per reports, The Labour Ministry is in the process of identifying and verifying 1.18 lakh dormant accounts as part of a pilot refund program.
This pilot initiative encompasses 7.11 lakh inactive EPFO accounts that hold balances of Rs 1,000 or more, amounting to a total of Rs 30.52 crore in unclaimed funds. The EPFO has confirmed the account details of 1.18 lakh subscribers and linked them to their active bank accounts, which is a necessary step for processing refunds.
Eligible members will not be required to submit any applications or claims to receive their provident fund dues, including any applicable interest. Instead, the refunds will be directly credited to their bank accounts once the required technology platform is established.
The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) has been assigned the task of enhancing the EPFO’s technology platform to facilitate the automatic crediting of pending balances. This initiative is part of the EPFO 2.01 reform program and is built on the Universal Account Number (UAN) framework, which was designed to provide each member with a unique identification number. During the verification phase, the EPFO conducted a “penny drop” exercise for dormant accounts linked to Aadhaar, updated bank account information, and identified deceased account holders.
While the EPFO has gathered the necessary member data, the software modifications required to enable automatic payments are still in development. This includes the introduction of a “system-generated claim” feature. Currently, the EPFO system only processes claims that are submitted by members, whereas the proposed changes aim to streamline this process.The report indicates that approximately Rs 10,903 crore remains unclaimed in 31.86 lakh inactive EPFO accounts over the past twenty years.
It was mentioned that Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya approved this pilot project on February 23, 2026, targeting inactive EPF accounts with balances of up to Rs 1,000.
According to sources from the ministry, the integration of technology is anticipated to be finalized by the end of August, allowing for the commencement of automatic refunds. Should the pilot prove successful, the ministry intends to extend this initiative to the remaining 24.76 lakh inactive EPFO accounts that hold balances exceeding Rs 1,000.
