EPFO Pension: Big news for EPFO members. When transitioning jobs or reviewing your EPFO account details, we tend to miss out on minor aspects. Yet, a slight error in the joining or exit date recorded in your EPF account can have a significant impact on your PF balance, transfers, and pension entitlements.

Incorrect Job Start Date

If your employer inputs the wrong start date during onboarding, it could lead to an underreporting of your service period. This inaccuracy might affect your PF balance calculations and future interest earnings. Inaccuracies in the exit date from your previous job can create issues with online PF transfers or withdrawals. Failure to update the exit date by the previous employer might cause delays in transfer requests by the new employer.

10-Year Service Requirement for Pension

A minimum of 10 years of service is necessary under EPS to qualify for a monthly pension for life. Mistakes in the joining or exit date could make your service period seem less than 10 years, potentially resulting in a denial of your pension benefits. Discrepancies in dates could lead to unwanted gaps or overlaps in your employment records, making it challenging to calculate your total pensionable service.

Updating Exit Date Online

Fortunately, Aadhaar-verified UAN members can input their exit date online without the need for document uploads. This can be done by accessing the portal, going to Manage > Mark Exit, selecting the date, and submitting with an OTP. Please note that this feature is only available two months after leaving a job.

If your former employer entered your exit date earlier than your actual last day, this could cause confusion in future PF transactions. This could result in delays in transferring or withdrawing your PF claim. However, interest on your PF balance is accrued based on the balance in your account, so a date error doesn’t necessarily result in interest accrual. But, when you leave one company and join another and the old company does not update the correct exit date, then online PF transfer gets stopped.

What is the process to correct the mistake?

Usually, these mistakes occur when companies update the portal, but due to lack of timely attention, they remain hidden for years. Members having Aadhaar-validated UAN can now manually correct various details on the EPFO portal without any documents.
