EPFO Medical Rules: If you are a working individual with deductions for your provident fund (PF), this update is crucial for you. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has announced that employees can withdraw a portion of their PF for medical emergencies without undergoing a complex process or extensive paperwork, providing immediate assistance under specific conditions.

EPFO Guidelines

In a video released by EPFO, it is highlighted that besides serving as a retirement savings scheme, the EPFO also offers financial aid during critical times such as severe illnesses. Employees can withdraw funds from their PF account for medical purposes, including serious ailments, without any minimum service period requirement, allowing early access to this benefit.

Eligible Medical Conditions for PF Withdrawal

The video specifies that PF funds can be accessed not only for common illnesses but also for severe medical issues such as heart disease, kidney failure, cancer treatment, tuberculosis, paralysis, liver disease, mental health conditions, and major surgeries.

Availing the Special Facility

Employees can withdraw a portion of their PF balance for medical needs, usually based on their salary or PF balance, easing the burden of medical costs, particularly for those lacking sufficient savings for unexpected health crises.

Purpose of the Facility

EPFO’s initiative aims to offer financial stability to employees, particularly amidst rising healthcare costs, providing significant support to the middle class and workforce. Notably, the withdrawn advance from the PF is not a loan but a utilization of one’s funds. However, it is advised to use this facility judiciously to prevent depletion of retirement savings.
