EPFO 3.0: Big news for EPFO members. The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization is set to introduce a significant convenience for its over 300 million account holders. Soon, PF account holders will have the ability to withdraw funds directly from their PF accounts using an ATM card.
EPFO is working on enhancing its digital infrastructure and launching the ‘EPFO 3.0’ platform, which aims to connect with the banking network and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). With this new feature, the process of withdrawing PF funds for emergencies related to hospital, education, or marriage expenses will become much simpler and faster.
How will the ‘PF ATM Withdrawal’ system function?
This new service proposed by EPFO will link the PF account directly to the bank debit/ATM card or Unified Payments Interface (UPI):
Centralized IT System: EPFO 3.0 will operate similarly to a core banking solution, where member eligibility and claims will be automatically verified in real-time.
Withdrawal via ATM/UPI: Once the eligibility criteria are met, subscribers will be able to withdraw cash up to the specified limit instantly by using their card at an ATM or through the EPFO app.
Auto-settlement of claims: Claims for medical emergencies and other urgent needs, which previously took 3 to 7 days to process online, will now be settled instantly through ATMs.

What is the withdrawal limit and what conditions apply?
Even with the introduction of the ATM facility, the fundamental rules and security measures of EPFO will still apply:
Limit: A daily withdrawal limit will be set for ATM transactions from the PF account, restricted to the amount eligible for advances (like medical emergencies, education, or marriage).
25% balance requirement: According to the updated EPFO regulations, account holders must maintain at least 25% of their total PF balance for their future retirement security.
Aadhaar and Mobile Linkage: For ATM or UPI withdrawals, the account holder’s UAN number, Aadhaar card and bank account must be fully linked and e-KYC verified.
EPFO 3.0 and Banking Tie-ups
EPFO is expanding its partnership with leading public and private banks in the country as well as India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) to make financial services easier for its members. This digital upgrade will not only lead to auto-settlement of claims but will also make the submission of biometric life certificates and doorstep banking facilities for pensioners completely digital.
