UGC Fake Universities List: If you’re considering further studies after 12th grade, beware, as the University Grants Commission (UGC) has once again released a list of 22 fake universities operating across the country. The Commission has clearly stated that these institutions have no authority to grant degrees of any kind. The UGC has urged students to check their accreditation on the UGC website, ugc.gov.in, before enrolling in any college or university.

Such fraudulent universities are operating in the education sector, deceiving students by misleading them in the name of education and making money. Admission here is a waste of both money and time. Therefore, you should familiarise yourself with the list of fake universities released by the UGC.

UGC’s major move, a crackdown on fake universities

UGC stated that these universities were misleading students and awarding degrees under false names, seriously impacting the quality of higher education. The Commission stated that all these institutions are violating Section 22(1) of the UGC Act, 1956. Therefore, any degree issued by them will not be considered valid.

The UGC Secretary stated that such action will continue to protect the interests of students. Furthermore, state education departments have been directed to take strict action against such institutions.

Delhi has the highest number of fake universities.

According to the list released, Delhi has the highest number of fake universities. Ten institutions in the capital were found to be granting degrees without accreditation. Furthermore, four institutions in Uttar Pradesh, two each in Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and West Bengal, and one each in Maharashtra, Puducherry, and Karnataka have been declared fake.

UGC’s Appeal to Students

UGC has advised students to verify the college’s accreditation on the UGC website or with the respective state’s higher education department before enrolling in any course or program. The Commission has stated that such fraudulent institutions jeopardise students’ futures, so it is wise to stay away from them.
