Maharashtra Govt Confirms Two MHT-CET Exams Yearly. There’s great news for millions of students in Maharashtra. The state government is making a major change to the higher education system, allowing the MHT-CET entrance exam for admission to engineering, pharmacy, and medical courses to be held twice a year. This change, modelled after the IIT-JEE Mains, will benefit approximately 700,000 students. It’s expected to be implemented in the 2026-27 academic year.

If you live in Maharashtra and are pursuing your 10th or 12th grade, this news will prove crucial. The government is making a major update to the MHT-CET entrance exam, which will be a significant benefit to students once implemented.

What is MHT-CET? Why is this exam so important?
The Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MHT-CET) is conducted for engineering admission (BE/B.Tech), pharmacy (B.Pharma), and several other professional courses in the state.
- PCM Group – Engineering courses
PCB Group – Pharmacy and medical courses
Some colleges also consider MHT-CET scores for undergraduate management and medical courses.
This is the state’s largest entrance exam, with millions of students participating every year.
What will be the syllabus for the new exam?
The MHT-CET is a completely computer-based test (CBT). The syllabus includes:
- PCM Group: Physics, Chemistry, and Math for Classes 11 and 12
- PCB Group: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology for Classes 11 and 12
The syllabus is almost identical to that of the board exams, making it easier for students to prepare.
When is the MHT-CET held now?
Currently, this exam is held only once every year in April. Students are admitted to various colleges and courses based on the scores obtained in this single exam.
However, many students only get a single chance, limiting their chances of improving their rankings.
Two exams will now be held, similar to the IIT-JEE.
Like the prestigious JEE Main for engineering, the Maharashtra government is planning to conduct the MHT-CET in two sessions. The JEE Main exam is held twice, in January and April, giving students a chance to improve their rankings. This same model will now be adopted for the MHT-CET, reducing pressure on students and providing them with a chance to achieve better scores.

When will there be two sessions in 2026? Two opportunities will be available.
According to reports, from 2026, the MHT-CET will be held in two different months, with the first session likely to be in March and the second in May. Students can take one exam or both if they wish.
If a student takes both papers, the best score will be considered for admission, just like in JEE Main.

Why is this change important?
Giving students two chances will make the admission process more transparent.
Stress will be reduced, and there will be adequate time for preparation between exams.
Improving their rank will increase the chances of getting into a better college and a better branch.
The state’s technical education will receive a format similar to national-level exams.
The government may soon issue an official notification on this change. Students are advised to keep an eye on the official website for updates.
