How Does the Samudra Sathi Scheme Work?

Under this scheme, registered fishermen receive ₹5,000 per year as financial assistance for two months during the fishing ban period. The scheme was officially announced by Minister of State for Finance Chandrima Bhattacharya during the state budget presentation last year. The government has allocated ₹200 crore for this initiative.

Why Was the Samudra Sathi Scheme Introduced?

Every year, fishing is banned in West Bengal from mid-April to mid-June. Since many fishermen rely on daily income, this ban causes serious financial difficulties.

  •  Reduces risks – Earlier, many fishermen went deep-sea fishing in secret, risking fines if caught. Now, they no longer need to take such risks.
  •  Brings relief – Fishermen have welcomed this scheme, as it solves a long-standing issue in their community.
