DA Hike: Central government employees and pensioners are keenly anticipating the central government’s decision regarding the Dearness Allowance (DA) revision set for July 2026. DA adjustments occur biannually—in January and July—based on the AICPI-IW from the preceding six months. In January, the DA was raised by 2%, elevating the DA/DR for employees and pensioners from 58% to 60%. Now, everyone is looking forward to the upcoming announcement in July 2026, which is projected to include an additional 3% increase (from 60% to 63%).

When can we expect the announcement?

The central government usually reveals the DA for the July cycle around the time of Dussehra or Diwali. This year, Diwali is on November 8, 2026, so the Cabinet is likely to give its approval in the last week of October or early November. The good news is that, despite the delay in the announcement, the increase will be retroactive to July 1, 2026. This means that employees and pensioners will receive a lump sum payment for the arrears covering the months from July until the announcement.

What does AICPI-IW stand for?

AICPI-IW stands for All-India Consumer Price Index for Industrial Workers. This information is published by the Labour Bureau under the Ministry of Labour & Employment on the last working day of each month.

This index tracks the rise in retail prices of essential goods (such as food, clothing, housing, fuel, etc.) in major industrial centers across the country over a defined period. As market inflation increases, this index also rises, leading to a direct increase in employees’ DA.

What’s the latest on the 8th Pay Commission?
