New Delhi: Farmers in Uttar Pradesh have received good news ahead of the new sugarcane crushing season. The government made a major announcement on Wednesday, announcing a 30-rupee per quintal increase in sugarcane prices for the 2025 and 2026 crushing seasons. This means that sugar mills will pay 30 rupees more per quintal this crushing season.

The price of early sugarcane varieties has now increased from 370 rupees to 400 rupees per quintal. The price of regular sugarcane varieties has also risen to 390 rupees, compared to the previous price of 360 rupees per quintal. According to a report, farmers will receive an additional payment of approximately 3,000 crore rupees this time. Assembly elections are scheduled in Uttar Pradesh in 2027. The government has certainly taken a step to appease farmers ahead of this.

How much will farmers be paid under the Yogi government?

Uttar Pradesh’s Sugarcane Development and Sugar Industry Minister, Narayan Chaudhary, has made a significant statement. He stated that the price of early variety sugarcane has been fixed at ₹400 per quintal and that of regular variety sugarcane at ₹390 per quintal. He further stated that the price increase will result in an additional payment of approximately ₹3,000 crore to farmers.

According to the minister, the current government has so far paid ₹2,90,225 crore to sugarcane farmers. In comparison, a total of ₹1,47,346 crore was paid during the previous Samajwadi Party and BSP governments between 2007 and 2017.

He claimed that the current government has paid ₹1,42,879 crore more in just 8.5 years. Chaudhary Narayan Chaudhary stated that Uttar Pradesh currently has 122 sugar mills, which rank second in sugar production. He claimed that previous governments had sold 21 mills at low prices.

How many mills were opened during the Yogi government?

For information, four new sugar mills have been opened in Uttar Pradesh during the 8.5 years of the Yogi government’s tenure. The minister stated that this is equivalent to eight large mills. Two sugar mills have also installed compressed biogas plants, strengthening the sugarcane sector’s alternative energy base. He added that under the state’s “Smart Sugarcane Farmer” initiative, the entire process of area registration, scheduling, and supply slip issuance has been made online.
