New Toll System: The hassle of toll plazas is about to end for those traveling on National Highways ( NHAI ). Now you will not have to stop or wait in long queues. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) is soon going to replace FASTag with a new GPS-based toll system.

In this system, the distance of vehicles will be measured with the help of satellite and toll will be deducted accordingly. According to media reports, this technology was earlier supposed to start from April 1, but due to some delay, it will now be implemented from May 1. Initially, it will be tested only on selected highways.

GPS Based New Toll System

This new system will replace the existing FASTag, in which the vehicle has to stop at the toll plaza. This GPS-based toll system will work on satellite technology, which will determine the distance covered by the vehicle and on that basis the toll amount will be deducted directly from the bank account. However, this system will be implemented on only a few national highways in the beginning and will work along with FASTag. Consumers can make changes to the GPS toll immediately if they want.

GNSS i.e. Global Navigation Satellite System is a technology that tracks the location, movement and travelling time of a vehicle through satellites. With the help of this technology, the method of toll collection is now being changed in India. In the GNSS based toll workshop held last year, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had said that “We are constantly working towards making the lives of citizens easier, making governance transparent and making services faster.”

Now under the new system, you will neither have to stand in line to pay toll nor will you have to worry about FASTag being scanned. The more the vehicle travels, the more toll will be deducted, that too directly from your bank account. This will not only save time but will also save fuel.

There will be no physical toll plaza in GNSS technology. It will be a virtual toll system which will track the vehicle’s position and travel distance through satellite. After this, the toll amount will be deducted according to the prescribed distance. There will be an option of digital wallet in it and technical glitches will also be reduced. Also, consumers can choose prepaid or postpaid payment options if they want.
