In light of the rising unemployment among youth in India, the central government launched the Skill India Mission, or National Skill Development Scheme. The mission’s primary objective is to make youth employable by providing them with industry-based training, thereby creating a skilled workforce and reducing unemployment. This scheme is administered by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and includes key schemes such as the National Skill Development Mission, National Skill Policy, Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, and Skill Loan Scheme.

Better Opportunities for Youth

The Skill India Mission is especially beneficial for youth who, for whatever reason, could not continue their studies after 10th or 12th grade. Such youth receive free training. The training period ranges from 3 months 6 months, and 1 year. Upon completing the course, a digital certificate is made available in DigiLocker, which is valid throughout India. This allows youth to easily find a job or start their own business.

Training is provided to youth

The mission aims not only to teach new skills but also to technically advance those youth who already possess skills, such as tailoring, driving, cleaning services, mechanics, hair cutting, etc. They are trained in new technologies, modern equipment, and industry standards, enabling them to find employment opportunities not only in the country but also abroad.

After completion of training, the government organizes employment fairs and provides job placement assistance. Youth trained under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana also receive personal accident insurance of up to ₹2 lakh for three years. This initiative helps to empower youth who possess talent but were unable to access opportunities due to financial or educational reasons.
