Silver Hallmarking- Will silver become more expensive? Hallmarking will start from September 1

Silver Hallmarking- The government is now preparing to guarantee the purity of silver jewellery like gold. The new rule of hallmarking on silver jewellery will come into effect from September 1, 2025. At present, this rule will not be mandatory but voluntary. That is, customers can buy hallmarked jewellery or non-hallmarked jewellery. But experts believe that people will gradually show more trust in hallmarked silver.

What is the new change?

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has set 6 standards for the purity of silver – 800, 835, 900, 925, 970 and 990. Now every hallmarked jewellery will have a 6-digit unique code (HUID). This will immediately tell what purity the jewellery is and whether it is genuine or not. This system will replace the old hallmarking method and bring more transparency.

Why is hallmarking necessary?

Hallmarking means certifying the purity of the metal. The mark is put on the jewellery after testing in the BIS lab. This assures the customer that the jewellery he is paying for is as pure as it is.

What benefits will customers get?

There is a possibility of adulteration in jewellery without hallmark. But now the scope of fraud will be reduced with the hallmark and HUID number. Customers will be able to easily go to the BIS Care App and check with the Verify HUID feature whether the code imprinted on the jewellery is real or fake. In this way, the purchase of jewellery will be more secure.

Just like the government made hallmarking mandatory on gold jewelery in the year 2021, similarly this rule is now being implemented on silver as well. Its purpose is to make the jewelery market more transparent so that the customer gets only genuine products.

What will change after September 1?

From this date, the customer will have the option to buy hallmarked silver or non-hallmarked silver. However, most buyers will now trust only hallmarked jewellery. This will not only benefit the customers but will also increase trust in the jewellery industry.
