SBI: In today’s digital age, where banking facilities are at our fingertips, cyber criminals have also become equally active. These days, crores of customers of the country’s largest public sector bank, State Bank of India (SBI), are facing a new kind of scam. Fraudsters are trying to clean out people’s bank accounts by sending fake messages about the ‘SBI YONO’ app being blocked. If you have also received such a message claiming that your account or app is about to be closed, then wait! This could be a dangerous ‘phishing scam’.
What is this fake ‘App Block’ message?
Scammers send customers a text message (SMS) that says, “Your SBI YONO account has been blocked. To continue using your services, please click on the link below and update your details immediately.” This message looks exactly like an official message from the bank, which panics people and they click on the link without thinking.
Once you open the link, it takes you to a fake website that looks exactly like SBI’s net banking website. They ask for your username, password, and OTP. Once you enter these details, your entire bank account is emptied.
PIB Fact Check and Bank Warning
Given the seriousness of the matter, PIB Fact Check has clarified that this message is completely fake. The Government of India or SBI never sends messages to its customers with such suspicious links. The bank states that it never asks for personal information, PINs, or OTPs via phone calls, SMS, or emails under the guise of account updates or KYC procedures. If you receive such a message, delete it immediately and never enter your banking details through any unknown link.
These days, criminals are scaring people with names like “Operation Sindoor” or luring them with the promise of reward points. The easiest way to avoid this is to always use the official “YONO SBI” app, downloaded from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. If you have any doubts about your account status, instead of following messages, go directly to your nearest bank branch or call SBI’s official customer care number. Remember, a small mistake can wipe out your hard-earned money in an instant.
How to complain?
If you accidentally click on such a link or are scammed, immediately call the Cyber Crime Helpline number 1930. You can also file a complaint at www.cybercrime.gov.in and notify your bank immediately so that your card or net banking access can be blocked. Vigilance is the best defense; therefore, always stay away from unknown messages and tempting offers.
