Obtaining an NOC is mandatory before moving to another state

If you want to permanently move your vehicle to another state, the first step is to obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from your current state’s RTO. This certificate confirms that there are no outstanding fines, loans, or criminal cases against the vehicle. Without an NOC, it is not possible to register the vehicle in another state.

Re-registration and Road Tax within 12 months
When you move a vehicle with a number plate from another state to a new state, you can drive it there for a maximum of 12 months. After that, it becomes mandatory to re-register the vehicle with the RTO of that state. You also need to pay the road tax there, which may vary depending on the state’s regulations. The good news is that after completing the new registration, you can apply for a pro-rata refund of the road tax paid in your previous state.

Changing your address and updating documents

After moving to another state, it is crucial to update your new address in your vehicle’s documents. This makes it easier to claim insurance in the future. If a vehicle accident occurs and the address registered in the RC (Registration Certificate) is different, the insurance company may delay processing the claim. Therefore, updating your RC and other documents with your new address is in your best interest.
