DA Arrear: The West Bengal government has made a significant decision for state employees and pensioners. They have announced that the long-awaited dearness allowance (DA) arrears will start being disbursed from March 2026. This move is anticipated to provide relief to millions of state employees and retirees. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee mentioned that the arrears will be distributed following the guidelines set by the Finance Department.
Who will benefit?
- State Government
- Employees pensioner
- Employees and pensioners of aided institutions
- Employees of Panchayat and Municipal bodies
These arrears are associated with the Revision of Pay and Allowances (ROPA) 2009, which revised the salaries and allowances of state employees.
When will the payments be made?
As per the state government, eligible employees and pensioners will start receiving their arrears from March 2026. The payment process will adhere to the regulations established by the Finance Department. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also shared this news on the social media platform X, affirming that the government has kept its promise to employees and pensioners.
The DA arrears situation even reached the courts. Some state government employees submitted a petition to the Supreme Court regarding the overdue payments. The Supreme Court instructed the state government to release at least 25 percent of the outstanding DA by March 31, 2026. This provided some relief to the employees. This announcement comes as the dates for the 2026 state assembly elections are likely to be revealed soon. The Chief Minister also declared an increase in the honorarium for priests and muezzins.
Why is DA crucial for employees?
Dearness allowance is a vital part of government employees’ salaries. Its aim is to alleviate the effects of rising inflation. If DA payments are delayed for an extended period, it affects the household budgets of employees, particularly pensioners.
