E-Passport Application: The Indian government recently introduced e-passports, a modern and more secure version of the traditional Indian passport. This new passport utilizes digital technology, enhancing identity security and making foreign travel easier than ever. E-passports contain a unique electronic chip that securely stores the passport holder’s essential information and biometric data. This move is considered a major step towards bringing Indian travel documents in line with international standards.
What is an e-passport?
E-passports look exactly like a regular passport, but have an electronic chip embedded within their cover. This chip stores the passport holder’s photo, fingerprints, facial recognition information, and other personal details in encrypted form. This technology is so secure that no one can copy or tamper with the data. Its primary purpose is to prevent passport fraud and identity theft.

Who can get an e-passport?
Any Indian citizen eligible for a regular passport can also apply for an e-passport. This includes both first-time applicants and those renewing their existing passports. Currently, this facility is available at select Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) and Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs). Therefore, it is important to check whether e-passports are issued at your nearest center before applying.
How to Apply for an e-passport
The process for obtaining an e-passport is similar to that for a regular passport. First, you need to register or log in to the official Passport Seva Kendra website. You then fill out the online form for a new passport or renewal. You then pay the prescribed fee and book an appointment at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POP). On the appointment day, you must visit the center with the required documents and complete the biometric process, which includes photo and fingerprint capture. After verification, the e-passport is sent to your address.

What is the application fee?
The fee for an e-passport is the same as for a regular passport. The fee for a 36-page passport booklet is ₹1,500, while for a 60-page booklet, it costs ₹2,000. If an individual opts for Tatkal service or other additional services, the fee may be higher.
What are the benefits of an e-passport?
The biggest advantage of an e-passport is its improved security. The chip and encryption technology make it very difficult to misuse the passport. Furthermore, automated immigration systems in many countries can quickly scan biometric data, speeding up airport checks. Furthermore, this passport is designed to meet international standards, providing greater convenience to Indian travelers globally.
