Inter-Caste Marriage Scheme: Getting married in India can be quite a challenge; expenses can soar into lakhs, and families often find themselves needing loans or borrowing money. But did you know there’s a government initiative that offers direct financial help of Rs 2.5 lakh to couples who marry inter-caste? Let’s dive into the specifics of this government scheme.

What is this scheme?

It’s known as the Dr. Ambedkar Scheme for Social Integration through Inter-Caste Marriages, managed by the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation. If a young man or woman from outside the Dalit community ties the knot with someone from within the Dalit community, they receive financial support of Rs 2.5 lakh. This scheme was introduced in 2013 and is still active today.

What is the eligibility?

One of the partners getting married must belong to the Dalit community.

The marriage must be registered under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955.

This financial aid is only available for the first marriage.

You need to apply within a year of getting married.

If you’ve already received financial help from any other scheme or government source, that amount will be deducted from the Rs 2.5 lakh.

How do you get the money?

The Rs 2.5 lakh assistance is given in two parts. First, Rs 1.5 lakh is sent directly to the couple’s joint bank account through NEFT/RTGS. The remaining Rs 1 lakh is put into a fixed deposit (FD) for three years. After three years, this amount, along with the interest, is given to the couple.

Necessary Documents

You need a marriage certificate (as per the Hindu Marriage Act), a caste certificate for the Dalit partner, proof of any previous marriage, an affidavit, an income certificate, and details of a joint bank account.

How to apply?

Couples who are getting married across castes and qualify for this scheme can take advantage of the benefits through this process.

You can apply with a recommendation from your MP or MLA, or submit your application via the District Administration or State Government.

Alternatively, you can apply directly by checking out the Dr. Ambedkar Foundation’s website (ambedkarfoundation.nic.in).

A lot of people don’t know about this scheme. So, if you can access this help when planning your wedding, it might really help reduce the expenses, especially for those who are struggling financially or thinking about delaying their wedding because they can’t afford it.
